The protagonist is a virtual paper doll for players to project themselves onto. There is no official canon for any of them. Hell, Sun & Moon itself disproves any sort of "100% pure canon protagonist" simply by the nature of the game's story, with the ultra wormhole and multiple universe thing. To pluck little tidbits of marketing material for each game to prove which starter and which gender and which team are canon is fucking absurd.
"But what about Red?" Literally the only gen 1 game where Red's team is possible at all is Yellow, and I seriously doubt that was the team you used when you played Yellow for the first time as a small bab. Fuck, Blue's team changes depending on how many fights against him you win. "Canon" my ass.
