Slifer doesn't do anything immediately and is highly vulnerable to removal. Ra either costs pretty well all of your LP for one big attack (when you can get 10,000 ATK out of any two Level 4 monsters thanks to Utopia Double), or has you minus hard AND pay a bunch of LP for slow removal that most protection protects against.
Obelisk, on the other hand, is protected from most removal, has solid stats without requirements, and can act as a boardwipe. Any deck summoning one of these guys reliably will be able to easily pay for his effect, too.
Pic related sees play, though. Not to support Ra, just to wipe the opponent's field, because very few cards can't be tributed.
