I personally prefer the "edgy" 90s style because I grew up with that but that in itself says something about my nostalgia bias. I don't think it will ever be popular again because the masses won't relate to it. It being the edginess/raw masculinity of the 90s (Pokemon is not technically masculine since it is toned down for children/boys but Sugimori was hugely inspired/has an enormous overlap in style by/of Toriyama. And DBZ is pretty much the defining masculine anime of the 90s. Early/Proto Pokemon was also pretty harsh with the literal whips etc. But we don't live in the 90s anymore and edgy boyishness (being loud/dirty/wild/adventurous) is not a dominant part of 2020s culture.
