it's when you have two or three new routes available and you can just fuck around catching stuff, playing with the various mechanics that give you access to different pokémon. shit like the fishing rods, headbutt trees, poké radar/ dex nav/ island scan/ whatever
that's when pokémon delivers on its promise. you're left entirely to your own devices, just you and your pokémon, on an adventure.
in the first few gens that happened all the time, culminating in gen 4.
then it started happening less and less. in gen 8 i don't think it happens even once.
