Interestingly, in Pokemon Blue, charmander had a lump on it's back that looks like it is the origin of charizard's wings. But it was removed in all later artwork of charmander

Charmander is very much a lizard that looks like a dinosaur(and no dinosaurs are not lizards), it literally takes on the classic kaiju shape of the upright standing dino, not unlike gojira, the puzzle bobble dinos, yoshi, agumon, etc

hell this connection to classic kaiju makes it even more of the perfect pokemon mascot due to the franchise's roots

Looking at this I'm reminded of Charmander. Does anyone remember when Charmander used to have a spike on the back of it's neck? It was even in the game sprites if you look. The back sprite made it especially obvious. By Gold and Silver it was completely removed, because the anime more or less kind simplified the design down and did away with it. It's sad that we lost such a weird little pointless, but aesthetically interesting detail.
