It gets worse when you realize that the only reason you can complete her bullshit task is because Lance gave you the Whirlpool HM, that coupled with the elder threatening to report Clair to Lance means Lance knew ahead of time that Clair would try to pull this shit on us.
This was probably more of a test for Clair than it was for us, Lance knew that if we could stop the Goldenrod takeover, we would also beat Clair, he knew that Clair would send us into the den thinking we won't succeed, so he gave us Whirlpool ahead of time to ensure that we could succeed anyway, what Lance wasn't sure of was if Clair would continue to refuse to give up her badge, Clair continues to refuse, at first, but the elder then warned her that if she didn't give up the badge, the reigning Pokémon League Champion would be informed of her bullshit, it is only when her entire fucking career is put on the line does Clair finally relent and give up the badge, promptly storming off in a livid fit because she had to admit we won.
Giovanni's abandoned son shows more emotional maturity than Clair does, Silver telling Lance to fuck off and that Clair's outfit is stupid before beating the both off them at the same time by working with you is arguably his best moment in the entire series.
