There's lots of desertic areas, sure, but there's also grasslands, forests, mountains high enough to feature snow, beaches. If you include Northern Cali and some of the uppermost states like Utah and Colorado there's also canyons and redwood forests.
A region based on the Southwest honestly doesn't even need Texas to be diverse.
