I used to browse or work on the same machine and fullscreen games can mess with other windows or get messed up themselves when alttabbing. Lowres games especially can resize other windows like notepad and explorer that I'd rather keep at a certain height. Some of of the games can run in a window without a third party program. Generals and IIRC Tiberian Sun did just fine.
