Blastoise was literally an unrelated Pokemon with its own pre-evo before they scrapped Blastoise's pre-evo and Wartortle's original evo to merge them into one line

I guarantee that if Gamefreak stuck with Wartortle's original evolution it wouldn't be treated as badly as Blastoise is.

It’s mostly speculative since we just have the back sprite to work off of. It would have kept Wartorle’s extravagent fins though.

Meanwhile Blastoise would have had a different pre evolution instead. They likely looked at the two lines and felt it was redundant so merged them together

Reminder that Blastoise never should have existed in the first place.
And if the OG Wartortle evo still existed it would definitely be popular enough to get into SWSH fuck Sugimori for ruining Atsuko's Squirtle line.

Why? WHY couldn't this have just stayed as Wartortle's evolution? If this Pokemon stayed it would easily be one of my favorite Pokemon in the entire series. I hope Gamefreak brings it back some how, as a actual Pokemon and not some lame gimmick like D-Max, G-Max, and Mega evolution.
