>>53655991>>53657891Yeah there's definitely a weird kind of implicit assumption on his part that those colors definitely were all the fault of "omg the 1998 American Nintendo Power Player's Guide!" and not that GF itself might have provided the "incorrect" scans to various Japanese sources too which then influenced various other official Pokemon media.
Like I have a Japanese Magical Pokemon Journey volume from 1999 that has a fucking neon blue Bulbasaur in one of the colored splash pages, which was probably either influenced by the more saturated Sugimori art or the anime (which could have itself been influenced by the Sugimori art). It's even more blue in person than this image I just pulled from an archive, and I bet if I was enough of a sperg to actually purchase even more old Japanese Pokemon books myself, I'd see even more color variations.
Like I'm not arguing that the Bulbasaur line being green WASN'T likely Sugimori's original intention and how he originally drew it, since that's how it looks in most recent games etc., but that the "incorrectly" colored scans seem to also have had an influence on some of the aesthetic/design decisions made across the franchise even within Japan.
