Trials are just deconstructions of gyms from the previous games and the differences just make the game more annoying than it needs to be. They shoehorn in more complex story elements while you do the island challenge instead of having them both be, AT LEAST, a bit independent of each other.
Team Rocket was able to take over the radio tower and control broadcasts in G/S/C. They held a base underneath the Game Center and leave after the player beats them in R/B/Y and after the player beats Guzma in Po Town... They just stay there? Why is this different? If Team Skull sucks so much, why are they so apparently difficult to control? What do policemen even do in the Pokemon world then?
There's no reason why Nanu needs to fight you before you leave with Gladion to save Nebby and Lillie.
Totem Pokemon are dumb filter to make the game longer. The fights with totem Pokemon are "designed" to be difficult but they aren't. Each of the fights are designed to have a strategy to counter-play what the development team decided the fight should be like instead of the player playing the game with the team that they have had for most of the game and maybe making a few adjustments. The only reason this worked in previous games is because the game gave you an idea of what was going to happen instead of blindsiding you with it and then giving you some information AFTER you've already lost once.
