Team contribution gives you 1-3 extra balls (team-based competition).
Individual DPS can get you at least 1 extra ball if you aren't a shitter (free-for-all competition).
There's plenty of competition in raids, even though they're marketed as cooperative gameplay. Those 6 extra balls you earned can be the deciding factor between catching or missing the raid boss. Look at all those Mewtwos that have fled because the players were scrubs who didn't team up with their team or didn't bring enough damage to the table so they got very few balls (and threw like shitters, on top of that).
