When are people gonna realize that the sales numbers for current Pokemon games should not reveal an optimistic picture for the franchise?
And I know people like to point at sales data but here is the truth about that: Pokemon games on the switch are not performing the way you'd expect Pokemon gams on the switch to sell.
Sun and Moon sold about 16 million copies. Sword and Shield sold 25 million- thats an increse of only 9 million.
Skyward Sword on the wii sold 3 million copies. Breath of the Wild sold 29 million. That is a near 10x increase. Mario Galaxy sold around 12 million. Odyssey toped 25 million- more than double. Animal Crossing City Folk had 3 million sales, New Leaf had 13 million. New Horizons pulled 41 million. Mario Kart Wii - 32 million. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 52 million.
Even with lesser known series, games that come out on the Switch perform far better than their series ever did on previous consoles. Luigi's Mansion got 3.3 million on the Gamecube, Luigi's Mansion 3 pulled 12 million- a 4x increase. Pikmin 2 pulled only 400k on the Gamecube- Pikmin 3 deluxe pulled 2.2 million. Fucking RING FIT ADVENTURE a new IP with a hardware gimmick pulled 13 million.
Pokemon's success on the Switch should be considered modest compared to its performance in the past. There is no justification for Sword/Shield losing to Zelda, Mario, Animal Crossing & Smash Bros. Lets Go Pikachu & Eevee barely even beat fucking Ring Fit Adventure.
