If a pokemon is subservient enough and sees you as its master you can abuse it no matter how powerful it is. Chyna Doll, the former pro wrestler woman, had an abusive boyfriend who used to bet her, even though she was strong enough to have killed him with her thighs. If anything, pokemon would be even more susceptible to being abused since they naturally desire a strong trainer to guide them.
Another thought: Slaves in the US South used to shave their masters. They got to hold a literal razor blade up to the throat of the man who whipped them and owned their literal bodies and rather than murder them, they did as they were told. Pokémon wouldn't be any different. Sure, you might get one or two uppity ones that would bite back, but the vast majority live to serve, and if they're beaten, they think it's because they are not serving well enough. Many would even double their efforts to please you. This is basic "Abusive Relationship" dynamics.
