After the Team Flare incident, Satoshi and Alan are hired by Professor Sycamore to research z moves through the summer in the Alola region. After a night of heavy battles, Alan makes a pass at Satoshi, who is initially hesitant but eventually responds to Alan's advances. Though he informs Satoshi that it was a one-time incident, they develop a sexual and emotional relationship. Shortly after discovering their summer together is being cut short, they have a briefly last battle out of rage and sadness.
After they part ways, Satoshi marries his longtime fiancée Serena and has one stupid daughter with her. Alan returns the next summer seeking work, but Professor Sycamore, who observed them at Alola, refuses to rehire him.
Alan goes back to Kalos, where he raises Hari-san with Manon. After four years, the now champions of Kanto and kalos meet again. The two kiss passionately, which Serena accidentally observes. Both continue to meet in Alola for infrequent "fishing" trips.
