Just learn basic prediction and basic roles.
I open with a Tentacruel(Water/Poison, Sp Def Wall, Good Speed), foe opens with a Marowak(Ground, Phys Attker) He'll probably switch to avoid eating a Scald(Water) and he is hoping to not get punished for the Switch so he swaps to something that resists Water.
So I can predict his prediction and use a non-Water move or I can set some Toxic Spikes. He sends a Chesnaught(Grass/Fight Phys Attker) out so I should get lost. But maybe he sends an Exeggutor(Grass/Psychic, Sp Attker) out so I know that even a STAB Psychic or Energy Ball won't stop me from laying that second layer of Toxic Spikes, even if I get outsped somehow.
That's it really. Look for 6 guys you like that satisfy roles(Sweeper, Physical Wall, Special Wall, etc) and build a smart strategy.
Then go lose. Lose A LOT. You only learn good mental instinct through practice. If you wanna enjoy Pokemon anon then you and your GF can. But like anything remotely competitive, you can't start as a pro.
