Simple (and this is true for all children's universes with an abundance of adult fans), It's a franchise squarely aimed at children.
As a result things are intentionally left vague because the writer either; Thinks the intended audience won't appreciate (or care) the little details required to fill a plot hole or explain something away. Or they don't really care that much and know children won't asks to many questions.
That leaves plenty of room for adults with too much time on their hands (and a subliminal desire to make their hobby seem more 'acceptable' by inventing nonexistent depth)
to see things where there is nothing to see.
