I was disappointed with Gen 4 when Diamond first came out because I thought the starters and box legendaries were ugly and it copied contests and secret bases from RSE, but did them worse. I might have had a higher opinion if I was the kind of person who played online though. I have a better opinion on Gen 4 now, but I'm trying to say that's the first generation where the thought that Pokemon was "dying" even crossed my mind.
