The pattern we 'used' to have was three versions of the game.
Black and White dropped that for sequels (4 versions of the same game), so X/Y were the ones that went "back to selling two versions of the same game". Of course, then Sadism/Masochism went back to doing 4 versions.
The current status quo is 2 versions of the same game, with two identical dlcs that you have to buy twice to use (so it's still 4 overall purchases).
S/V will likely follow this same pattern. Gen 10 will move on to one single version of the game, but it will be strewn will MTX.
