I'd like something more similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, with small maps and few units, each with their attive and passive abilities (you could switch which 4 moves your pokemon should have at the moment choosing from all the moves it has, as if the moves were DnD spells that you need to memorise at the need)
Devil Survivor is even more similar, but the human player shouldn't fight instead.
The human player may behave like the Heroes from the Heroes of Might and Magic series, without direct involvement in the battle but it may have special abilities that he can unlock through exp points (for example a skill that gives you the ability to arrange your pokemon on every position you want on the grid before the battle begins)
Dark type pokemon could have the ability to do backstab, idk something like a damage multiplyer when you hit an enemy from behind (since dark pokemon relies on "dirty" moves)
Grass type pokemon could be the same as DnD druids, with grassvine moves that bind the enemy in a grid for some turns
And so on, these are just some examples
