Today I concluded Pokemon Daybreak, and with it I now have what should be an obvious rule for making you Pokemon fangame, but fuck it apparently, we need to go over it.
During the climax of Daybreak, the devs decided that the player should remain locked inside the enemy base until they've cleared the climactic event. They also decided that to 'prevent softlocking' they would not give the player access to a PC. Then they decided to have 3 boss battles with 3 vastly different teams, all take place during this event, finally concluding with a boss battle against Level 100 Primal Dialga.
I not knowing any of this, entered the base with only 4 pokemon, an HM slave, and an under levelled mon I was letting leech off the XP share.
I was unable to leave, I could heal, but I had no ability to swap out my team, refresh supplies, or anything else. Now, I was playing on Hard, so I was locked out of my inventory, and thus was essentially in the position of being unable to replace team members and due to the level cap, being unable to out-level the content to make up for the fact I had two trash-mons.
So, don't make areas that lock the player in where they can't be booted out of it if they fail. Imagine if the Elite 4 locked you in the first time you entered, and you weren't allowed to change team members or buy items after you failed. That was my hell. I did eventually clear it due to RNG, and after that, the game wasn't difficult, because hey, when I can build a team, I can pretty much handle any bullshit.
I smashed up the Elite 4, took down the Champion despite them throwing box legendaries at me, and I did it, I beat the stupid game, I'm not gonna bother with the post-game nonsense, I've suffered enough.
If you like masochistic experiences, shitty writing, music that doesn't loop correctly, terrible sprite cohesion, and a game designed by people who clearly think their shit doesn't stink... Then still don't play Daybreak. Don't waste your time like I did.
