After Harvey handled every gym trainer, he was sent out against Brawly's Machop. He started off by Focusing his Energy while the Machop Bulked Up, before sweeping the buff 'saur with his Wing Attacks.
Next came a Meditite which tried to Focus Punch- but before it could pull anything off, Harvey took it down with a one-hit KO!
After that came a Makuhita, whom Harvey had no trouble at all with-
-until the Makuhita chowed down on its Sitrus berry.
And after 2 turns of Bulking Up beforehand... its Vital Throw sent Harvey flying into a wall, where the Taillow now lay unconscious.
The match was put on hold to ensure his safety- and he WAS alive... but his wings could no longer work and it was clear that he needed a hospital.
Before Brawly could call the ambulance, he found his Makuhita laying on the ground unconscious. How?
Lance had swooped in and used Confusion.
And how did he know that?
Lance was still fighting the Makuhita after it'd been knocked out.
...
From then on, Effie had become far more cautious about training, adopting her partner's approach towards things and avoiding battle when unnecessary.
That didn't help her, of course, when Brendan came knocking for a fight underneath Cycling Road- which he demanded on the spot.
That one was a close call, too, but Effie came out of it alive. As did her team. Lance Gusted the Lombre to death, Tatiana took care of his Slugma with a single Double Kick, and Doris managed to just barely overcome his Marshtomp after surviving a -1atk Bide with just 3HP.
But... the team came out of it okay! And so they felt a need to celebrate once more. With little hesitation they all headed to Mauville, where the casino and bike shop awaited them.
