>3D Complicated. The models are good, and the overworld Kalos is visually quite nice. Cel-shaded 3D art was a good direction for Pokemon, if they were ever going to do 3D at all. The gameplay is mostly faithful to the top-down RPG style with some dynamic camera work. Call it safe or lacking in ambition maybe. But Masuda said that they enjoy pixelart, so maybe they just like this style of game design too. Although does create problems, like having no camera control in areas that SHOULD be fully 3D (like Lumiose City or the Azure Bay area). And their actual fully 3D games like SV have had even more issues, like technical fuckery everywhere or bad visual design that makes them look inept. XY is in this funky crossroads, where its holding on to classic level design and also struggling to be the first 3D Pokemon game.
