The problem with these games is that they were probably made by literal teenagers or autists, if you are developing a fangame and you are a mentally stable adult, whatever you shit up will be alright. What's important is to not force the story on the player too much, just tell the player only the basic elements of the story, and only force events on him that are strictly necessary. Give the player freedom, and make most elements of the lore/story optional or accesible only if the player explores your game.
