For the uninitiated, Reborn is infamous for its story described as a clusterfuck at best, filled with terrible OCs and events completely out of left field. Things like
the first poison gym leader killing himself after you beat him (and making it so you don't get any badge), the death of the first fighting leader by Garchomp, drama around child custody issues, an orphanage owner being a horrible abusive doctor obsessed with zapping his kids, a whole curveball into drama between two apparent lesbian lovers because it turns out one was only pretending to love the other to stop her from killing herself, which is then resolved by giving one amnesia, and fucktons more I've forgotten to mention. With the archive dead, my old playthrough's lost, but there should be plenty other Let's Play you can find.
As it turns out, Reborn was originally an online league hosted on what was then called poke-place. People would RP as gym leaders and people would challenge them for the league, and so on. Here's ancient video evidence of a league battle. You may recognise the gym leader in question as being one of your ingame rivals, Cain.
