Are you using something called the pencil tool when you draw? iirc GIMP has a lot of different brushes. You should play around with them. Can you download custom brushes to GIMP?
But yeah, all you need to do is use a different brush. Pic related, I drew on top of the base I made and made some really simple edits using a similar brush. That's all you need to do.
