I had mixed feelings when TPC decided to end XY by having Ash's plane crash in Mongolia on his way home from Kalos, killing him instantly, but I think SM is better for it in the long run. I can only imagine by this point they would've shoehorned him into Lillie and Gladion's plot so much that they would've had to give him a special Z-Ring or have him take care of Nebby to justify his appearance. Even the TRio seems to have chilled out a bit now that Ash is dead.
