Is Voltorb a bad design because it's just a ball with eyes? Not really if it is a mimic and there's no much that you should add to make a monster based on this concept to works. This is how monster design works, it's not just "hey it must be edgy or cool to be a good design", sometimes you must make weird ones.
Even if I say that, I don't like elemental monkeys because I don't see where is the wise monkeys idea in their design. None of them acts like their "no evil" monkey.
