BW onwards started to take story importance over the overall the progression by making it not as much interconnected as the others (althought BW2 kinda went backwards on that)
Then we arrive at today with Gen 8 were the progression is extremely linear (even inside something like the steam city they just lock you out of area till you go exactly where the dev want you to go) both routes and dungeons are simple corridors as much as a GB game and an over-abundace of cutscenes-spripted events even though, unlike BW, the story is almost completely non-present till the very end
