There's nothing inherently wrong with a Pokemon (or any fantasy creature for that matter) resembling a food item or having cartoonishly strange, goofy, or cute features.
The only people who actively hate it are people who can't appreciate a little fun, forcing themselves to feel anger towards something with a literal smiley face pattern on its back.
Vanillite family hate is something you'd expect to see on Facebook 9 years ago from people who haven't even touched the franchise since the end of Pokemania. Not sure why the Pokemon community took those opinions seriously and followed suit.
