Quickly whipped up simplified versions of each of the maps, every map has in some way or another a bunch of small areas that don't lead to another town/city or the league. In general though you can break up each region into Lines & Circles, I think the issue with Unova is that you don't really loop around the map so much as it's a continual push forwards, in Kanto the game has you running around the Saffron part of the map for a good chunk, Johto has that whole thing with the Sudowoodo Tree and also moving West then East, Hoenn has the best one in the series with the massive loop you do for the first five gyms, Sinnoh crosses over itself a few times using Mt. Coronet as a point of focus, Unova in both BW and B2W2 (due to the latter's limitations on where you can go) have a relatively straight line with only a minor amount of crossing over old territory, although there is still a degree towards the end of B2W2 with after Opelucid City. Kalos basically does a figure eight although is more or less a well disguised straight line since the crossing part of the 8 is only from a map view whereas on the ground level you don't cover areas that were available on your first visit to Lumiose. Alola is initially a set of loops with Melemele and Akala but Ula'Ula is more in line with B2W2 and Poni is an outright straight line.
