When I first saw the old man blocking the path in Viridian I didn't get he was supposed to be lying down, and so somehow tried to interpret his sprite as though it wasn't horizontal. I really didn't know what the fuck I was supposed to be seeing until he's shown standing up later.
I can't even really make myself view it the way I did the first few times anymore, because by now it's too obvious to me what it's supposed to be. But at the time, when I'd only seen a few NPC sprites, it was some weird, confusing shit.
