Open-world Pokemon.
A vast, non-linear region.
You can start the game from any number of small villages.
Pokemon no longer advance by level, they gain experience in stats through a Pokemonamie-esque system where you actually interact with your Pokemon as well as experience through battle.
Moves are unlocked through capability of stats and the selection differs based on how you train them.
Pokemon are still encountered in tall grass, caves, surfing etc. but there are more methods of getting rarer Pokemon out of areas which you learn as you progress through the game.
Such as strong Pokemon being able to shake Pokemon out of trees, digging in the earth to find ground Pokemon, rolling over logs to find bug Pokemon.
HM obstacles like cut trees, strength boulders, smashable rocks etc. still exist, but serve to expand areas rather than hide content until the game wants you to play it.
A gym exists for all seventeen types, but only 8 are necessary to qualify for the league.
The league is tournament-based rather than an Elite Four.
Legendaries are available as quests and you actually have to put in research and solve puzzles to unlock them, like the Regi trio in RSE but on a grander scale.
