I would say Shin Megami Tensei is more literally like a "monster taming game" because the demons you use are actually part of your team, in Persona they still use Skills for you, and the stats of your currently equipped Persona become the same as yours, but it's certainly more abstract of a "monster taming game" compared to the mainline games.
