I started playing with ex-Deoxys and my first deck was a Manectric based one where I played pic related too (it was pretty shitty, but enough to beat all other kids at the oratory).
Also, now that I remember, I have a fun anecdote:
When the Holon series came out it was said in the blurp that some Holon pokémon could be used as energies. Since no one saw the Castform/Volorb line we thought that all "delta species" pokémon could be assigned as energy of their respective type.
It didn't change much in our game, we simply moved from 20-20-20 to 25-2-15 in pokémon/trainer/energy ratio.
