Use pre-evos only. Been doing since gen 4 and it's made otherwise easy games pretty damn difficult, even in X/Y. Everyone moans about how easy the game is yet use fully evolved mons with all the items in the world, switch battle style and most likely use OU: the team: the experience, so it's no damn wonder why it's so easy.

I used around 20 odd Pokemon all round, but my core team as of the eighth gym is the following:
