On the cusp of a new release, I'm back to contemplating this. How come no other franchise has been able to recreate the Pokemania hype of the late 90s and early 00s?
Minecraft, Fortnite, Marvel, and whatever are all popular with the kids these days but nothing was ever all consuming like Pokemon was. Back in the day it was Pokemon this, Pokemon that, if you wanted to market anything to kids you HAD to put Pokemon on it or else it wouldn't sell.
Didn't matter if you were a boy or a girl, black or white, rich or poor. You played the games, collected the cards, watched the show, and maybe even read the manga if you were one of those weird kids. Even the summer of Pokemon Go was merely a pale reflection of what Pokemania once was.
Was it just because it was a franchise purely about funny marketable mascot characters? Then how come Minions doesn't have the same steam?
