The original Japanese line from Guzma's dad is:

The anon who originally translated it a while back admitted that they made a slight flub, but they haven't bothered to clear things up because it's already so widespread. Guzma's dad is the one who got beaten black and blue.
However, the exact wording of the line in the Japanese version still carries heavy implications of abuse. While I cannot verify it for myself since I don't know a lick of Japanese, translator anon states that the dad uses an angry verb for "set him to task" and that the second part of the sentence is phrased as "because". This wording would not be used if a violent reaction was a surprise to the father, implying that the situation was already a physical one. It should also be noted that physical discipline is rather common in Japan.
The ultimate implication here is that Guzma's father initiated some form of physical altercation with him when he tried to run away, but Guzma is the one who finished it. Whether or not Guzma's father physically abused him before then is still up for debate however.
The English translation of the line is:

This translation is actually very close to the original Japanese in phrasing and implications. French and German are heavily censored, both outright stating that the conflict was a Pokemon battle. I've no knowledge of any other translations.
