For me, it was Pokemon Silver version. I still had a black and white gameboy. I was at Mt. Silver and I ran into this guy and noticed an animation of stars around the Quagsire. My brain kicked into "flee, just another one of these guys" mode. It wasn't until I went to school the next day and told my friend that he let me know I ran away from a shiny Pokemon. I didn't run into another shiny until Roggenrola in Pokemon X (which I caught).
