I think a region based in the Caribbean and Middle/South America could be neat. Or maybe even the US as a whole, not just NYC. Desert in southwest, forests in pacific northwest, midwest is glassy plains and the east cost is more industrialized cities. In the post-game, you can visit a snowy city in the north and a tropical chain of islands. And just maybe, part of the east coast is off-limits until the postgame, then you can gain access to Unova. Legendaries could be based off of bigfoot, an alien (not related to Beheeyem), paul bunyan, etc. Could be neat.
