I don't know much about this shit but on 4chan at least the girls trapped in otome villainesses are hugely popular with male readers who fucking love spaghetti femdom. Female protagonists work for guys who like girls, but the saving grace for female readers is when they need to convince a male audience the men are worthy of the fug by making them the best ever in some way. Yes I fall for harem protags why do they make them so cute and soft thighed.
If you want to venture further along novel translation sites then there's competition from the rest of Asia. Princess and knight romances, het and lesbian, are all over Chinese language webnovel sites and slowly trickling through. BL from these places have exploded too with the help of Tencent cartoons and Netflix licensing live action shows, and get greater translation efforts because 'gosh BL with a plot' is almost a meme. But keep in mind: gays are banned. There's still more female protag webnovels on these sites, and tons of shows made. We just don't see them translated.
Even though most Korean and Chinese novels get machine translations at best and read like absolute shit because nobody cared to do the job properly. Honestly quit after the first sentence if it reads like garbage.
