You can't "battle" the Marowak ghost. Your attacks do nothing to do it, but it also can't attack you. Kind of like Mimikins, who could float and and pass through solid objects (which a living Mimikyu can't do), but its Shadow Claw attack just passed right through Gengar, because it's dead and Gengar is alive.

A Mimikyu can't die if it was already dead to begin with. Ghost type Pokemon have always been completely different from real ghosts like the Marowak ghost in Lavender Tower.

But conversely, it can't interact with the physical world at all, or even battle (its Shadow Claw just passed right through a Gengar)

It's true that they aren't ghosts. They're just creatures with ghost-like attributes. ACTUAL undead ghosts are completely incorporeal and can't interact with the living world in any physical way.

The Ghost Marowak in Gen 1 was the same. None of your attacks worked on it, but it also couldn't hit you.

Pic related would float and pass through objects, which are things that ordinary Mimikyu can't die. Its Shadow Claw was unable to hit a Gengar due to it being dead and the Gengar being alive.
