That said I wish they would only give megas to pokemon that are 3-stages or 2-stages but already good (e.g. Slowbro). The fact they gave pokemon like Sableye, Glalie, Banette megas really sucks because 100 BST and a new ability was not nearly enough to save them, and now they'll never get a legitimate evo. GF can't even give them new abilities to make them less shit now because megas have set abilities. Sableye is the only decent one out of that group and he will only get worse and worse over time as more fairies are introduced and the power creep goes further.
Charizard or Beedrill are IMO the perfect examples of a good mega- taking a competitively irrelevant but cool pokemon and making it relevant again. Sure Beedrill's stats are still too shit to ever be OU but at least he's usable in some way now.
