It's like the 1986 Transformers toys, where they killed off all the characters people liked and replaced them with new characters that often had weird, clumsy toys designed by westerners. While a lot of the things it added to the brand are beloved now, it also totally missed the fact that people are attached to the characters.
Pokemon is the same way - for all B&W contributed to the game, nobody wants to play with a fucked up ugly bird or monkey. They want to play with the Pokemon they've been attached to for over a decade. Had B&W not failed, you likely would have seen a whole new dex every Gen instead of old Pokemon being brought back.
