Likewise, the PokeGear, PokeNav, and Poketch were adapting real-world ideas of handy newfangled mobile phones and other such PDA-likes, but with extra bells and whistles on top to make them seem impressive and invaluable for a Pokemon trainer. But IRL has kind of caught up and the modern smart phone is just honestly so much more than any of these past visions of portable future-tech were. So really, current Pokemon is *less* futuristic than it used to be, with nearly everyone in the Poke-world carrying around smart phones like everyone in real life does, the one fantasy aspect desperately trying to differentiate it from the mundane being the Rotom compatibility.
