It's def at least partially a weird page border/printing deal because flipping through the whole book I see some instances of eyes etc. being cut off by the edges of the pages in a way that seems unlikely for them to have been originally drawn that way, and also some images of Ciao magazine scans on google showing a bit more of the full image. Meaning that it seems the way it's reprinted for the volumes shaves off a bit of the art.
It's pretty minor and overall the books look fine and even have some color pages, which look really vibrant and have a fun retro Pokemon vibe. NO idea why I got fixated on this so hard but it instantly just struck me as weird.
