TRE I don't have a very high regard for to be honest. Seems primitive compared to some of the things people have done with hacks since, and the level curve is wonky as hell.
There's also Red Battle Factory which is a demake of the Factory in Gen I with all Gen I's mechanics, it's pretty fun.

After I named myself, we get a cutscene like the anon who played earlier said there was. What anon didn't say is this is a long-ass cutscene. Ctrl+Alt+Del has less words, thank goodness for fast forward.
The gist of it is some mysterious dude goes to the richest man in the world asking for money to look for a MacGuffin. He hypnotizes the rich man to agree with him, they name themselves Team Darkness, and I gain control of my player, who talks and is heading to class.
Oh, and he has a talking Eevee. It's not explained.
