It's a feeling all of the newer games never really managed to recapture, at least for me. Playing them (apart from some parts of Sinnoh) felt more like an amusement park ride from one Gym to another rather than a true adventure.
Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that the new gyms are all varied and interesting looking, but there is nothing like the sense of adventure that comes with going through a long-ass route with nothing but your trusty Pokemon and a few fellow trainers in sight.
