The eye to body ratio is a good scale of how big something is.

The battles in the adventure and online, coupled with the catchy music, make them an important for me. But as of right now, I'm mostly in it for the collecting. I like that you can keep bringing your old Pokemon to the newer games. Seems nobody around here cares for that though, since they think it's pointless because PK Hex exists.

They're average. They made some great decisions and paired them with some terrible decisions. HMs are finally gone and thank God in Heaven for that. I can't believe it took this long for that to happen. Totem battles are a fantastic fantastic fantastic idea. Before the bosses in Pokemon games were the gym leaders who were basically trainers who fed their Pokemon a few rare candies. The Totems are true boss Pokemon that get boosted stats and call in Pokemon to supplement their strengths. You have Lurantis that can call in Castform to cast Sunny Day which boosts its Synthesis heals from 50% to 75% and lets it use Solar Blade in 1 turn instead of two. You have Salazzle that will call in Salandits that will use Toxic to poison you. And if you decide to go all in on offense and just ignore healing then Salazzle will use Venoshock which gets bonus damage from hitting poisoned Pokemon. And you can only use one Pokemon at a time so it really feels like a boss you have to pool your strength into beating. Z-Moves are good and bad. The idea behind Z-Moves is that it buffs the entire cast by giving any Pokemon holding the Z-crystal a nuke to do extreme damage or give yourself a powerful buff or debuff. But you can only use one per battle. This is also the game where the characters feel like characters instead of EXP buckets. They do things besides wait around for you to beat their asses.

One thing that I dislike about how modern Pokemon games are is how railroaded you are. Really I think I'm being slightly unfair but I can't help but feel the way you unlock Alola is starkly different from the way you unlock Kanto or Johto or even Hoenn. I know a lot of people hate Kanto so let me take a second to illustrate my point.

In Kanto you're mostly railroaded one way through gyms 1 through 3. But once you make it to Celedon the game opens up in a big way. From the second you enter Celedon you have a bunch of objectives in front of you. You can use Cut to open the gym, probably the reason you expected to be there. You can crash Team Rocket's casino operation. And once you finish that you can either get some water to open up Saffron or you can backtrack to Lavender to get the Pokeflute so you can clear Snorlax. Once you have the Pokeflute you can get to Fuschia two different ways: east down the fishing docks or west down the bicycle road. You know I didn't even know until years later that you're supposed to go to Saffron before Fuschia? That's because the game doesn't really stop you from doing it that way even if it forces you to clear Celedon first. But if this was made in the same way as Gen7 you'd wouldn't have anywhere close to this many options. And it was like this to a lesser extent in Johto too. Once you got to Ecruteak you could good go east or west and even though the level scaling got fucked for it you still had choices in which route you wanted to clear first even if both routes were mandatory.

I will say that the characterization is leagues better in Alola though and is probably the first time the characters felt like characters and not like EXP buckets that I had to talk to sometimes.

I don't mind the Team thing. Team Skull is probably my favorite team ever. But the one thing I want is for the game world to open up again. The best way I can explain what I mean is when you reach Celadon City in Gen 1. From Pallet to Lavender you're mostly railroaded but once you get there the game world is opens way up. You can choose to beat up Team Rocket. You can take on Ericka. You can give the guard some water to get into Saffron so you can clear Silph Co. Or you can backtrack to Lavender after you got the Silph Scope to clear the Tower so you can get rid of the Snorlax to get into Fuscia City. You had like 4 directions you could go and the game doesn't really punish you for picking any of them. I didn't really get that with SuMo, I had to kind of sit along for the ride the narrative provided.

Which I like certain things about the narrative. This is the first Pokemon game where the characters feel like characters. But I think I'd prefer to take it at my own pace rather than play Final Fantasy but with Pokemon.
