It would've gotten the similar fanfare if he'd won the shitty Unova league after 14 years of uselessness, or would've gotten even more fanfare if he won the Kalos league with actual build up after 17 years. For most people it was just a blurb that announced Ash had finally won a league after 22 years of losses, the concept is what's engaging. People love closure.
